Pedicure gone wrong
In one of my first outings for 'me time' after we got Alex, I went to get a pedicure.
I went to the same place I'd gone for the previous 6ish years. As I was sitting at the park a few days later watching Alex play, my legs were itching a lot. I lifted up my pant leg to check out the situation and saw faint, red bumps from my knee down.
My skin has always been sensitive in weird ways that I can't always pinpoint. When I was a kid, I broke out into a rash after using the pink bar of Caress soap. When we moved into our first house, I broke out into a rash and it took forever to realize our carpet was full of gypsum powder from the remodeling the homeowners had done. The dust was so fine, it was undetectable...until I vacuumed one day. Powder filled the bottom of the canister.
At the park, I was wearing fuzzy pants and figured they had stuff in them from being stored all summer...maybe more gypsum powder?
Each day that passed, the red bumps got bigger, and bigger, and more painful. They covered only from the knee down leading me to realize, it was from the pedicure. I began to worry I had caught some bacterial infection that was going to result in amputation of both legs under the knee.
It turns out, it was an extreme allergic reaction to something used that day.
Eventually the bumps grew, popped and melded together to get this...
mmmm. Delicious.
But wait, it wasn't over...it then spread to almost everywhere else. Thankfully, just one spot on the side of my face and my side neck were the only places that couldn't be covered with clothing.
Disgusting I know.
It took almost 8 months to go away and I still have scars on my hands and wrists.
Ugly.
Last week before we went out of town, I decided, I needed a pedicure...badly.
I found myself sitting in the same place that left me looking like above. I always say, "he'll only try it once" when Alex begins to do something I know will end badly. Problem is, he always tries more than once and apparently, so do I. I'm way past my feeling invincible years, but ironically have developed very little sense.
When I walked in, I was greeted like a long, lost friend...at least I think; their English is still not the best.
Several women walked by to say hi.
"How's your son doing?!"
"Are you teaching again?"
"We got more shades of blue to choose from!"
"You look skinny!" (jackpot. business gold.)
I was like, listen guys, something went terribly wrong last time I was here. They crowded around with very concerned looks. As I explained and showed them the battle scars, they were very sympathetic and apologized. They probably thought I was a moron for coming back because I was starting to think the same thing, but we decided they would only use water and do only my feet. No massage...no lotions...
The lady knew exactly what to do...cut the nails, don't scrub off the running calluses. Gross I know. It's just that I have to start all over when they do and it hurts!
It's just that it felt like coming home.
Who cares if I had a nasty rash that lasted almost a year...these women know me.
Just an aside: We are back from vacation and there is no rash.
Success.
