Just put a bird on it!

I really love Portlandia.

I recently thought of two things I thought might be pinworthy.

1. Alex has been invited to several birthday parties this fall. I remember when we threw him a big party for 2 years old because that was his first birthday here. I went all Pinterest out because I wasn't working and well, why not? I like craftiness.

We had a family party for 3 and will probably do the same for 4. We're pretty bad at making birthdays a huge, organized party in this house because that would require planning ahead. We are terrible at planning ahead. Until he specifically asks for friends at his birthday, we're going to keep them family. It's easier.

Back to my pinworthy idea...
He got a lot of presents from people and we didn't open them during the party. They were put under the table and needless to say, with all the little kids running around and the moving of the presents into a closet where we gave them to him a little over time, cards got lost and separated and misplaced and we weren't sure who gave which presents when it came time to write thank you cards.

Our little tradition of giving birthday presents has become brown paper wrapping with something unique to the birthday person drawn on the front.
I have started taping the card to the gift, then wrapping everything so the card will be inside with the gift and I don't have to worry about it getting lost on the outside.

we can't all be artists

I haven't followed up with anyone we've done this for,but I hope they were like, oh my gosh, who is this from? Lost card? Open the gift...see card...hot damn!, that's a good idea.
Let's be honest...as adults, we see a card and we're trained to read it first. But even as adults, we'd rather just rip open the gift and see what it is...then read the card of course ;) News flash in case you didn't already know: Children do NOT care about cards.

2. When we go to restaurants, the coloring sheet for children is usually too advanced for Alex's skill set...a word search...a word scramble, reading or writing something...
So we bought a spiral notebook and bring that and crayons (sometime stickers!) when we go out to a restaurant.
Depending on the day (and level of hangriness), our creativity can vary in degree of oddness and humor.
We started dating them, so we can go back and look at our masterpieces over time that we all create together.

Okay, confession...this idea already exists on Pinterest, but if you pin mine you won't feel like shit for not taking the time to make a pretty fabric cover for the notebook and a fancy crayon holder that attaches and applique patches and pictures and letters that spell out your child's name.
We straight up roll with the notebook and a Ziplock bag of crayons/markers/pencils/whatever...

Go ahead, pin it.

Of course, I have no idea how to imbed Pinterest links into my blog. It's probably better that way. You can imaginary Pin it.

To close, I leave you with another funny Portlandia skit...
Birthday Loan.
