The weirdest day

Originally written in October, 2016.

My co-teacher had a sub today.
I was, at first, thankful because this sub was really nice and very interested in doing her job. She asked me what the kids were learning and asked a few clarifying questions to make her day (and mine) run smoother.
I had zero voice today. As in I was whispering, with a few donkey brays every now and again for lower sounds.
This worked out perfectly, as this sub was especially chatty. She was telling me all sorts of stories about her life and where she's come from, and where she believes we should be heading...both as people, a society, and a nation. I heard a lot of, "And I sure don't understand..." stories and a lot of, "I'm just too old for this..." commentaries.

It's not that I didn't want to listen to what she had to say, it's that I really didn't have time to listen to everything she was saying.
I was at a desk in my co-teacher's room, rushing to make a key for the homework we gave Pre-AP that day and since I am notoriously known for making errors in computation...just for Pre-AP...I was trying to concentrate. She was talking and talking and talking and talking. She apologized and said she never talks that much (a clear sign that she does) and then told me I was so sweet for listening. Like I had a choice.
As a reward for listening, she gave me a CD she recorded in 2001 of her singing chart topping pop ballads.
I am so glad I was in the room by myself because had just one of my other co-workers been in there, I would have erupted into uncontrollable laughter...would have been a real asshole. Instead, I was a real asshole when I retold the story later and satisfied my need to laugh and laugh and laugh.

Bless her heart.

I popped the CD in on the way home, completely ready to laugh some more.
But then, she started singing very familiar songs...pop ballads of the 90s, a few nursery rhymes for children. It was a very strange mix, but her voice wasn't terrible.

Then. She started singing songs from Jim Brickman albums. There were at least 4 in a row and I knew every word of every song. I hadn't listened to those CDs in awhile, so I was really enjoying myself. When I got home, I sat in the driveway very quietly for almost 5 minutes. How was I going to avoid telling my co-workers that I actually enjoyed the CD if they asked tomorrow?!

So busted.
