V's 2015 birthday

V is one of those older boys who still likes Batman, and still likes Legos and is kind of obsessed with having every Batman Lego set that exists.

Two new sets came out this year (thanks to the Lego catalog we get) and V excitedly showed me both of them. As in, hint, hint my birthday is in a week.

LEGO DC Comics Super Heroes Black Manta Deep Sea Strike (76027)

His birthday always sneaks up on us because it's only a week and some after Christmas. I always do a pretty terrible job of planning a fun birthday day, even when I set out to.

I went to the Lego store on January 2, because when the catalog said the new sets came out January 1, I thought 1)Stores are closed on New Years 2) I should be able to get them the second day.
As I set out to find a parking space at the mall, I thought, "I am out of my damn mind being here right now!"
As I sat in my car waiting for a spot, watching a women disassemble her fancy stroller in 18 easy steps, I asked myself, can I really do this, right now?
Since it would have taken an equal amount of time to get out of the parking garage to the driving time there, I decided to suck it up and drag Alex through the mall. For Dad. He's worth it, I repeated over and over.
It was crazy crowded and I found out that the mall was open on New Year's Day. When I asked the man at the Lego store if they still had the new Batman sets, he told me a very long story about how many people they had in the store the day before and how they didn't get a truck that day like they had planned on...blah blah blah...short answer No. He showed me a tiny set (like 20 pieces) from the Lego Movie that had a Batman character piece in it. I looked at him very kindly, smiled, and said, "Sir, this gift is for a grown-ass man. I won't be able to convince him that this is equal to what he specifically asked for because of ONE Batman character piece."
He completely understood, of course.
The store was so crowded, even Alex didn't want to stay and play.

So again, my gift giving at the birthday would be less than ideal.

Despite poor gift giving, we tried to have a good birthday day.
Alex wanted to (through suggestion) wear Batman for you on your day of fun...

Our hopes and dreams for the future. I need someone to make his face an emoji for me, stat.

An impromptu lunch at Joe T's. Sorry the Mariachi band played Happy Birthday for the girl behind us, but then we just sang.

I told the lady at Breadwinners that the cake was for a child..."You know, like we're trying to get a good cake that we all like, but trick our child into thinking it's fun..."

Hope you had a good day, honey. Someday, we'll do it up right. Maybe at the next milestone. Thankfully, we still have plenty of time to get it together, you young thing!

Happy Birthday, today!

Sorry for being so grumpy yesterday. You know I hate going back to work after the break. Despite what it might have seemed like, I fought hard to act happy. And thanks for understanding that I needed to watch Divergent 6 times over the break. You know we (mostly me) would talk about being Dauntless all day, but then pledge Amity in the end.
I'm okay with that.
